The performance is preceded by Maktub: Ashes to Alchemy\, a dance choreographed and performed by Vidya Kotamraju. \nHusband and wife violinists Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy reimagine the possibilities of string chamber music. Their sound is intimate yet expansive\, rooted in South Indian classical music\, Western classical traditions\, and jazz. Their improvisational fluency allows their violins to intertwine seamlessly\, creating music that feels both ancient and contemporary. \nTheir debut album\, Nakshatra (SPINSTER 2023)\, named after the Sanskrit word for constellation\, explores the balance between individual expression and collective harmony. As The New Yorker writes\, their music is “free-flowing and globe-spanning.” The Guardian calls Nakshatra “a gorgeously ruminative listen\, blending the traditions of folk and South Indian Carnatic music with heavenly improvisation.” \nOpening the evening is Maktub: Ashes to Alchemy\, a striking solo by Vancouver-based dance artist Vidya Kotamraju.
